Monday Message - Labor Day
Kids Eat Right: Picnic Ideas |
Labor Day often marks the "end of summer" as school begins this week and we move into the busy fall schedule. I encourage you to take the time to enjoy a picnic on Labor Day. If you already have plans for the holiday, work it into the weekend or plan a weeknight picnic before it gets too cold. Find a new park to explore and do not forget to leave enough time to play! Have fun and feel free share your picnic story.

Monday Message - The Season for Strawberries
The Michigan strawberry growing season is very short. Do not delay in getting your Michigan Strawberries and take my advice - pick them in abundance. They can be frozen or preserved in fruit spreads that you can use through next season. Jump on Pinterest for easy recipe ideas and tips for quick hulling.
Want a challenge? Skip a step and do not hull your berries this year, Native Americans believe that the sacred medicines are in those bright green leaves. Eat the whole berry. Keep the strawberry intact when freezing and throw them into your morning smoothie for an extra nutrition punch. Find more information on these nutritious sweet fruits in this week's Kids Eat Right Article.

Recipe of the Week - Tiger Fries
Tiger Fries
Not too long ago, my daughter and I went through a local drive through and the only option for a child meal included "fries." I did not even realize that we had ordered any until the smell permeated my car as we pulled out of the drive through lane. With her impending appetite creating some chaos in the backseat, I handed her a "French fry." She said "what's this?" I did not answer right away and as she took it from me, I told her it was "hot." After taking the "hot" potato from me she took a bite and her next comment was "yummy!" Bummer. Needless to say, I had tried to shelter her from fast-food fried potatoes for quite some time but even to a child with very little "fry" experience, "yummy!" is a common response. Although I am not too worried about creating a habit as that was her first experience in 2 1/2 years, I find it is nice to have a good kid-friendly "fried potato" recipe in my back pocket! Check out this Kids Eat Right Recipe for a "yummy!" potato treat.

Monday Message - Chocolate and Acne
Does chocolate cause acne? Well, no. Hormones and many other factors play a role with baby, teen or adult acne. But the real question we should be addressing is....Does sugar cause inflammation? The answer is Yes! Acne is inflammation and most chocolate has sugar in it...but cutting out chocolate is not going to clear up acne. Try this instead:
1. Reduce sugar intake. No more than 25 grams of added sugar per day is recommended for children and adults, although children should probably have even less. Added Sugar does not include Natural sugars in fruit and milk products. However, even these should be limited to 2 fruit servings per day and no added sugar in dairy products i.e. yogurt, flavored milk, ice cream.
2. Get rid of cleansers that clog pores. A microfiber cleansing cloth with water only will do the trick. Check out these Body Cloths from Norwex, an eco-friendly company devoted to radically reducing exposure to chemicals. These cloths pick up all bacteria from the skin and trap it in the cloth while destroying the bacteria as it dries.

Monday Message - Holiday Leftovers
One of my favorite topics is food safety! As we are in the midst of the Holiday Season, we gather often for food, friends, family and fellowship.
The topic here is Food. Hot or Cold, we need to be conscious of its whereabouts during our holiday get-togethers to avoid foodborne illness. Sometimes that tummy ache is the culprit of too many Christmas Cookies but more often than not - lurking bacteria in our holiday dishes are to blame.
Stay Leftover Savvy this holiday season and check out this video from Kids Eat Right.
